1. What Proxenos Legal is, and is not
Proxenos Legal is a technology platform that lets clients find independent immigration attorneys and meet them by video. Proxenos Legal is not a law firm, does not practice law, does not give legal advice, and is not a party to any attorney-client relationship. The attorney you consult is solely responsible for the advice given. Nothing on this site is legal advice from Proxenos Legal.
2. Attorneys are independent
Every attorney on Proxenos Legal is an independent, licensed professional. Attorneys are not employees, agents or partners of Proxenos Legal. Proxenos Legal verifies bar admission, identity and EOIR registration before an attorney's page goes live and requires sworn disclosure of disciplinary history, but Proxenos Legal does not supervise the legal work and makes no warranty about its outcome.
3. Fees: what you pay and where it goes
- The attorney's fee. Set by the attorney as an hourly rate, billed by the minute for time actually used, with a 15-minute minimum. This is a legal fee, paid to the attorney. Proxenos Legal does not share in it.
- The platform fee. A separate technology and service fee paid by the client to Proxenos Legal, shown before you book, for the booking, video, scheduling, payment and support services the platform provides. It is not a legal fee and is not paid to the attorney.
Proxenos Legal does not pay attorneys for referrals, does not charge attorneys for placement in the directory, and does not rank attorneys by anything they pay. Directory order is by availability, rating, price or experience, as the client chooses.
4. Prepayment, holds and refunds
Booking places a hold on funds you have added to your Proxenos Legal balance. Those funds remain yours until a consultation is completed. On completion, only the minutes used (subject to the 15-minute minimum) and the platform fee are charged; the remainder of the hold is released to your balance. If a consultation is cancelled or rescheduled by either side, the attorney cannot take the matter, no time is proposed within 3 days of a request, or neither party joins, the full hold is released. Unused balance can be refunded to your original payment method on request. Funds held for a booking are the client's prepayment held on the client's behalf; they are not the attorney's until earned.
5. Video consultations
Consultations take place over video provided by a third-party service. Proxenos Legal does not record consultations and does not retain audio or video. The room opens 30 minutes before the scheduled time; time is metered from when both parties are present.
6. Confidentiality and conflicts
Proxenos Legal keeps a record of every consultation. An attorney you book is told whether you have consulted other attorneys on Proxenos Legal before: the date and the general matter type only, never the attorney's name and never their notes. Before you share confidential information, the names you give at booking are checked against the attorney's own conflict records so the attorney can decline a matter they cannot take. Notes an attorney writes are private to that attorney. A consultation summary travels to another attorney only with your consent, given at booking. Proxenos Legal staff do not read attorney notes in the ordinary course; notes are encrypted at rest.
7. Ratings
After a consultation both sides may rate each other. Ratings are sealed until both are in, or for 7 days, so neither party is influenced by the other. Ratings are the opinion of the person giving them. Either party may report a rating that is abusive or false and Proxenos Legal may remove it.
8. Attorney obligations
By listing on Proxenos Legal an attorney represents and warrants, under penalty of perjury, that they are admitted and in good standing in every jurisdiction they list; that they have disclosed all disciplinary, sanctions and criminal history as asked; that their profile is truthful and complies with the advertising rules of their bar; that they will practice only within the scope of their authorization; that their photo is a current likeness; and that they will notify Proxenos Legal within 7 days of any change to their license status or any new complaint or proceeding. Proxenos Legal may suspend or remove any attorney at any time.
9. Accounts, conduct and termination
Keep your sign-in method private; you are responsible for activity on your account. Do not use the platform to harass anyone, to solicit outside the platform in violation of your bar's rules, or for any unlawful purpose. Proxenos Legal may suspend or end accounts that breach these terms.
10. Liability
To the fullest extent the law allows, Proxenos Legal is not liable for the advice, acts or omissions of any attorney, for outcomes of any legal matter, or for indirect or consequential loss. Proxenos Legal's total liability to you for any claim relating to the platform is limited to the platform fees you paid in the 12 months before the claim.
11. Changes
We may update these terms. The version and date at the top change when we do, and material changes are notified by email. Continued use after a change is acceptance of the new version.
